MOUNTAIN MUSHROOM MAN
Driving through the mountains in southern Italy our car nearly stopped in the middle of the road. I had never seen such an incredible array of mushrooms, and freshly foraged at that. This 'Mountain Mushroom Man' as I affectionately call him was typical of those I met on our travels, passionate about his way of life... Mushrooms. When he saw my excitement he headed for the back of his little truck, reaching for a small cooler. He approached me as if we were about to make a drug deal. He didn't speak English and I didn't know a lick of Italian but in that moment we found a common language BLACK TRUFFLE. He revealed black truffles the size of my fist (you can see one in his right hand). I had to have it, I held out my wallet and asked "how much?" he replied 50. I couldn't believe my ears, 50 euros, it was easily worth 10 times that. Needless to say, I left with the black gold, thanking this kind gentleman for the opportunity of a lifetime.
